This “print” was created using a watermark technique. The handmade paper is white, and the image is only visible through light. David created this piece with Shabbat candle-lighting in mind. Just as the woman of the home covers her eyes and raises her hands to “hold back” Shabbat until the blessing is recited, so does the paper hold back the image until it is revealed by light.
The image includes a personal prayer, composed in the 17th century, to be said when lighting the Shabbat candles as well as an 18th century candelabrum.
