Description
It’s all here, from the Jewish scholars of Rome to the effervescent Campo de’ Fiore, from the walled Ghetto to the Cinqe Scuole—Five Shuls. Since Rome was home to Jews from different lands, who gravitated toward their old country’s customs and styles of prayer, five synagogues were planned. Roman authorities, however, would tolerate only one. Hence the one building called Cinque Scuole. Tragedy, incredible endurance, personal encounters, humor, horror, and twists of history are all brought together in this work.
